The deceased was identified as Manikandan (39), alias Dadha Manikandan, a native of Kuyilapalayam in Vanur in Villupuram. Police noted that he was facing at least 10 murder cases, 6 extortion cases and 4 abduction cases.

After coming to know that Manikandan was camping in a house in Anna Nagar West Extension for the last three weeks, senior officers from Villupuram despatched a team from Auroville police station to nab him on Tuesday evening.

When police entered the house and tried to overpower Manikandan and his associates, the gangster allegedly attacked sub-inspector Prabhu with a big knife. Following this, SI Prakash took his gun and fired two rounds at Manikandan, killing him on the spot. The police team also managed to nab three of his associates. Manikandan’s body has been send to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

SI Prabhu, who suffered a cut injury on his head, is under medical care at the KMC hospital, police noted. Jayanth Murali, ADGP (law and order), visited the injured policeman.

This is the third encounter killing happening in Chennai since July 2018. The Chennai police in July 2018 had shot and killed A Anandan (25) in Taramani area. He was wanted in connection with the attack on policeman in Royapettah. He was also facing 13 cases, including 5 attempt to murder cases.

In June this year, Vallarasu, a 20-year-old history-sheeter who was allegedly involved in a murder, was shot dead by a team from city police. Police claimed he and two others had attacked two constables with knife, leaving them with deep cuts, after which police were forced to open at Vallarasu who was trying to escape after attacking a policeman.
