Say ‘prost’ this Oktoberfest with a party right at home
Oktoberfest, which began as a public celebration of Germany’s Bavarian culture in the 19th century, has been steadily growing popular around the world, including in our city.

Elevate your everyday potatoes into iconic German pancakes, and munch on pretzels, an unmissable part of the festivities, while you sip on beer-based cocktails
Pub eggnog
Ingredients
Eggs: 4 (separated)
Granulated sugar: 2/3 cups
Milk: 2 cups
Heavy cream: 1 cup
Nutmeg: Ground
Beer: 150 ml
Method
- Separate the eggs, adding the whites into a bowl, and reserve the yolks.
- Beat the egg whites for at least 10 minutes, until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
- Add the yolks to sugar, and beat until the colour is lightened.
- Add in the milk, cream and the nutmeg. Mix until well combined.
- Gently fold in the whites into the yolk mixture. Stir in the beer.
- Pour into glasses and serve chilled with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
Soft pretzel bites
Ingredients
Warm water: 1 ½ cups
Instant yeast: 2 ¼ tsp
Brown sugar: 1 tbsp
Salt: 1 tbsp
All-purpose flour: 450 gm
Baking soda: ½ cup
Egg: 1 beaten
Coarse sea salt: For sprinkling
Method
- Whisk the yeast into warm water and set aside for a minute. Add in salt, brown sugar, melted butter. Slowly add the flour and mix with a wooden spoon until dough is thick.
- Knead the dough and shape into small bites. Leave them as spheres or stretch them into pretzel shape. Now combine the baking soda in a pot of water and bring to a boil. Add in the pretzel bites and let sit for half a minute.
- Remove the bites and set aside on a baking sheet. Brush each bite with a beaten egg and sprinkle some sea salt.
- Bake for 15 minutes, until golden brown. Serve with a cheese sauce or a honey mayonnaise.
Cherry beer slushies
Ingredients
White beers: 2
Cherry juice: 2 tbsp
Cherry liqueur: 2 tbsp
Lemonade: 250 ml
Lemon wedges: For garnish
Cherries: For garnish
Method:
- In a shallow dish that you can use in a freezer, pour in both the beers. Add in the cherry juice and liqueur to taste.
- Place in the freezer. After every half hour, scrape the ice crystals that form with a fork. Continue the process for three hours.
- Fill the serving glasses with the cherry-flavoured beer slush. Top with some cherry liqueur and lemonade if desired.
- Serve with lime wedges and cherries.
Crisp german potato pancakes
Ingredients
Potatoes: 4
Egg: 1
Onion: 1 (small)
All-purpose flour: 1 tbsp
Black pepper: 1 tsp
Salt: To taste
Oil: ½ cup
Method:
- Peel, wash and grate potatoes using a hand grater. Peel the onion and add to the potatoes.
- Take a large mixing bowl and break an egg, flour, salt, pepper and whisk well.
- Fold in the potato mixture. In a skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Take a spatula of the mixture and make a small round pancake.
- Fry about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crisp.
- Serve hot with a side of sour cream.
