Following this, the proposal will be placed before the Chennai Smart City Limited Board for final approval. According to a Chennai Corporation source, the suspension bridge would be 250-feet-long, on which the visitors would be allowed to walk and enjoy the view of the Villivakkam lake. “Earlier, we had proposed eight bird islands, but the council had given nod only for four islands. The decision will help us to store more water,” the source added.
It is learnt that the senior officials were explained of the detailed plan prepared by engineers of a reputed technical University.
The Chennai Corporation, under the Smart City Mission, has taken up the eco-restoration and beautification of Villivakkam lake to convert it into a recreational spot. Under the project, the civic body had already prepared detailed project report for the lake, including building a children’s park, gym, walkers’ pathway, Aavin parlour, multipurpose lawn and open-air theatre.
“Presently, deepening works on the lake are under way along with creating of toe wall around the lake. We have been instructed to complete the desilting and other basic works before the onset of monsoon to ensure maximum storage of rainwater,” an official said.
The official added that other works such as children’s park, the suspension bridge, gym and other facilities would start after the monsoon season.
Explaining the rationale behind the bird islands, the official said that the islands will have trees so that the birds can nest and lay eggs. To keep the island and trees pristine, we will not provide any connectivity to the islands. The islands would provide a safe and secluded place for the birds.
The officials are expecting Chennai Smart City Limited Board to approve the projects in a few days following which the tenders would float for the construction of the suspension bridge, added sources.
