Within a span of two days, the Chennai city police on Sunday cracked the Nanganallur house robbery case in which 120 sovereigns of gold and diamond jewels were burgled from a businessman’s house by arresting a 10-member ‘Bagri’ gang in Ujjain with the help of Madhya Pradesh police.

According to police, eight special teams were formed after the burglary was reported on Friday, police combed the CCTV footage and found three men moving in the locality in a suspicious manner with a huge gunny bag.

Since the door of the house was broken with a crowbar, police suspected the involvement of a north Indian gang. One of the teams checked the CCTV footage at the MGR Chennai Central which showed the gang boarding a Mumbai-bound train. Following this, the Chennai police alerted their counterparts in Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh and the gang was nabbed at Ujjain railway station by the local police. The cops also recovered 200 sovereigns of jewels, which were robbed by them in different places, from the arrested persons.

After receiving the information, St Thomas Mount Assistant Commissioner Sankara Narayanan and inspectors Albin Raj Sivakumar flew to Indore and took custody of the suspects. Eight of the gang members were identified as Kamal Bhati, Roy Mal, Ram Nivas, Kailashpathi, Howrah, Haadu Sawariya, Babulu and Ramda Muya. Investigation revealed that the suspects belonged to Bagri gang from Rajasthan and they were also involved in burglaries in Tambaram in 2017. Police said that steps were being taken to bring them to the city in a day or two. A detailed investigation would only reveal the gang’s involvement in other burglaries.

After the arrest of Bawaria gang by the then North zone IG S R Jangid way back in 2006, the involvement of another north Indian gang in burglaries in the city has sent shock waves in the city and suburbs.

In the Nanganallur case, the gang had decamped with 120 sovereigns of jewels from the house of Ramesh, a granite businessman.
