According to an official of the Chennai Corporation, the work would be undertaken at a cost of around Rs 29 lakh and improvement work would include upgradation of astro-turf, floodlights, mesh and others. Hundreds of children from the locality train at the ground, which was improved in 2014 with better playing conditions including artificial turf. However, the turf was worn out forcing the children to play and train in dangerousconditions.

“The artificial turf is in damaged condition for the last six months. Due to this, players have to be cautious while playing. It is easy to get injured in the ground,” a football player said.

Meanwhile, the civic body had floated a tender recently inviting suitable contractors to take up improvement works at the ground. “The tenders will be finalised after September 24,” the official said.

According to the residents, around 300 children from Mullai Nagar, Sathyamurthy Nagar, MKB Nagar and Kalyanapuram areas train in the ground. “During the weekend days, the number would be much higher,” residents said.
