    Man pushed by mediator during fight with wife run over by bus

    In a bizarre incident, a government bus ran over a 48-year-old man who was quarrelling with his wife at the MGR bus terminus in Koyambedu, after he was pushed by a passer-by ‘peacemaker’ who intervened between the squabbling couple. The man, identified as David, died on the spot in the wee hours of Thursday.

    David and his wife Selvi worked at a teashop in Koyambedu and stayed on the pavement near Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), said the police. David was allegedly addicted to liquor, and used to quarrel often with Selvi.


    Around 3 am on Thursday, a quarrel erupted between them again, as he troubled Selvi reportedly under the influence of alcohol on the first platform. When he allegedly started assaulting his wife, Singaravelan, a beggar, intervened in an attempt to resolve the problem between the couple. In themelee, Singaravelan allegedly pushed David and the latter fell on the bus bay.


    At the same time, a government bus coming to Chennai from Tiruvannamalai entered the terminus and ran over David’s head, killing him on the spot.


    On information, the CMBT police secured P Singaravelan (47) of Theni. David’s body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Singaravelan was remanded in judicial custody.


    Class 9 boy crushed under water tanker near Manali


    Taking a lift in a water tanker to reach home earlier turned fatal for a Class 9 boy, as the lorry fell off the road and crushed him to death on the spot near Manali on Thursday evening.


    The deceased, Shyam, son of Rajkumar-Hemavathy couple from Thanthai Periyar Nagar in Manali, was studying in a school in Washermenpet.


    While returning home from school on Thursday evening, Shyam got a lift on a water tanker to reach home earlier. As the lorry was travelling on the mud road connecting the two localities, it lost balance while trying to give way for another truck coming in the opposite direction and fell off the road.


    Shyam and the lorry driver Kubendran were stuck inside the vehicle, but the latter managed to get out of the vehicle sought the help of passers-by to rescue the boy. As he got stuck between the ground and the truck, an earthmover was brought to lift the vehicle. When they removed the tanker, rescuers found that Shyam had already died crushed under it.


    The Madhavaram traffic investigation police went to the spot and sent Shyam’s body for autopsy. Driver Kubendran has also been admitted to a private hospital with injuries.
