The Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital will soon get a new building for the rheumatology department and the outpatients block at the hospital. The state health department has sanctioned Rs 23 crore for the construction of the new building for the department.

The rheumatology department is functioning in the sixth floor of tower 1 at the hospital, which will start functioning in the separate building by next year, say hospital authorities.

The Directorate of Medical Education has approved the amount for the construction of the building and has also allotted an additional amount of Rs 3.47 crore for carrying out the civil works for the same block.

The public works department has been directed by the state health department officials to initiate the construction of the building.

Currently, the rheumatology department only has a general ward and a section for pay wards adjacent to each other.

The healthcare staff working at the department say that in-patients being treated in the rheumatology department are on various treatment procedures including electrotherapy treatment, physiotherapy treatment, and other procedures. However, they have to be taken to specific departments in other buildings every day for the same. The construction of the new building will ease these problems of the in-patients.

“The construction will be started soon and the exclusive building will have laboratory services, physiotherapy department, outpatients’ services, in-patient blocks and increased number of pay wards for the patients in the rheumatology department. The independent block will be provided with all types of equipment and facilities for both surgical and medical procedures,” said Dr Narayana Swami, medical superintendent, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

At RGGGH, four new blocks, including Nephrology, Traumatology, Urology, and Hepatology departments have been constructed that will start functioning by the year-end.

The construction for a new tower in the hospital is underway to expand the in-patient services of the hospital. However, the building is expected to come up only by next year.
