    Duo robs motorist at gunpoint in Minjur, held during vehicle check

    Two men who robbed a 45-year-old man at gunpoint in Minjur police station limits on Friday night have been arrested. Police said Vasu from Aminjikarai was returning home after visiting a relative at Red Hills.

    “He was intercepted by two persons on 400-Feet Road in Minjur. They pointed a gun at him and robbed Rs 5,000 and mobile phone from him and tried to flee the spot,” said police.


    The duo, later identified as Mani alias ‘Bonda’ Mani of New Gummidipoondi and Yuvaraj of Vengal, were nabbed by Gummidipoondi sub-inspector Marimuthu and team during a vehicle check.


    They were arrested under various sections of IPC and under Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act, and were remanded in judicial custody.


    Meanwhile, Tiruvanmiyur police have arrested a five-member robbery gang who targeted lone men and women on Old Mahabalipuram Road and East Coast Road. Two bikes, 4.5 sovereigns and a mobile phone were seized from them.


    The accused were identified Vikram alias Paiya (18), Siva alias Vellai Siva (18), Dhinesh, Naveen (18) and B Parthiban (18) of T Nagar. A hunt has been launched for three more youngsters identified as Surya, Muttai and Deen.


    Vinothkumar of RA Puram was travelling on LB Road in the wee hours of August 28 after dropping his aunt at Kalakshetra Colony when he was intercepted by the gang. They threatened him at knifepoint and relieved him of four-sovereign chain and a mobile phone.


    Based on his complaint, a special team was formed to comb the CCTV footage in the locality and the suspects were identified. They were nabbed on Friday night and remanded in judicial custody.


    Investigation revealed that the gang indulged in robbery to make a quick buck. A hunt has been launched for the remaining trio.

    A history-sheeter with six murder cases pending against him was arrested in Red Hills on Saturday in connection with several land grabbing cases in Puzhal and Red Hills.


    According to the police, Thanika alias Thanikachalam (38) of Periyapalayam and his friends – ‘Madhavaram’ Prabhakaran, ‘Kavankarai’ Vanamamalai, Manikandan, Parthiban, Anthonydoss, Surya, ‘Chennai’ Prakash, ‘Ambattur’ Inba, Iniya, Sylu, Subash and a few others – formed a group to grab unclaimed lands in Puzhal and Red Hills area using forged documents. The other accused are yet to be secured.


    Thanikachalam was remanded in judicial custody on Saturday, and a special team was formed to secure the rest.


    Meanwhile, Puzhal police arrested Thanikachalam’s accomplice Chandru alias E Chandrakumar (33) of Sholavaram, also history-sheeter, for robbing a pedestrian. Chandrakumar robbed Devakumar on Ponneri-Red Hills high road on Friday and was secured within hours.


    Police said the duo had threatened Udayakumar (38) of Choolai to transfer his land worth Rs 2 crore in Padianallur in their names. A case was registered against them in this regard.
