The deceased, Y Jaba (32), a resident of Bharathiyar Street in Ernavur, was a private school teacher. The police said that the incident happened when she was making a thermocol design for her son’s school project.
“Since there was a power shutdown, Jaba had lit a candle to complete the work. But the candle slipped and fell on a kerosene can, which led to an explosion,” the police said.
Jaba’s husband Yabesh and son Nelson were sleeping in another room. Yabesh ran out of the house to leave the son outside and returned into the house for Jaba. However, Jaba was completely engulfed in the fire before she could be saved.
Neighbours, on hearing Yabesh’s cries, rushed to the house and sent the father and son to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. On information, the Ennore police and the fire rescue team reached the spot and put out the fire. Jaba’s body was sent for post-mortem examination.
