The dog, about eight years old, has been living as a pet in the area. “Since Friday night we found the dog acting abnormal. When I went to keep dinner for him, he started barking at me. And this morning whoever crossed him, he tried to bite them. I informed the panchayat office about the issue and they informed the blue cross to take away the dog,” said Prabhu M, a resident from Parvathipuram.
The dog had reportedly shown signs of rabies. “We received a call from Thiruneermalai panchayat office that a dog had bitten seven people in the area and stated that the government veterinary failed to check if the dogis rabid. Volunteers from Blue Cross went and caught the dog. When it was checked, itshowed signs of rabies and we have isolated it,” said Dawn Williams, the general manager of Blue Cross of India.
“If the dog is a rabid, he will die within 7 to 10 days. The team will then send the dog’s body to the Madras Veterinary college for post-mortem examination to confirm if it wasrabid. But, if the dog died the people who suffered bites need to take some additional treatments. The cattle should also be treated or else they would be in trouble,” he added.
The people who were bitten by the dog are undergoing treatment at the Chrompet Government Hospital.
