10k cops to be on Chathurthi security duty
The City Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the week-long Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations beginning Monday.
Chennai
The police have given permission to several organisations to install 2,600 idols, which is 100 idols less than last year. This year, the police had introduced a single-window system to obtain permission from various departments to erect idols.
About 10,000 police personnel and home guards would be deployed across the city and would be manned by Assistant Commissioners, 12 Deputy Commissioners, six Joint Commissioners, three Additional Commissioners.
One police personnel will be posted on guard at every idol stall, said the police. They will be working with the other departments such as Tangedco, Fire and Safety and Corporation for the smooth conduct of the festival. The police have also identified sensitive areas and additional personnel would be deployed in those places.
The police have laid down strict rules and guidelines for the festival and during the immersion of idols in the sea during the next weekend. The immersion of the idols would be allowed on September 5, 7 and 8 at designated places - Ramakrishnan Nagar, Ennore, two places in Tiruvottiyur, Kasimedu fishing harbour, Srinivasapuram in Foreshore Estate and Neelankarai.
“We will register cases against those using loudspeakers,” police sources said. Digital banners are also not allowed. Curbs on putting up flags, flex posters or banners of political parties are also in place.
