The deceased, Manimekalai of Kallukuttai in Perungudi, was the wife of suspect Udayakumar, an auto driver. The couple has a two-year-old son.

The police said that Udayakumar was addicted to liquor and would bring his friends home to consume alcohol. This often led to quarrels between the couple.

On Monday morning, too, Udayakumar brought four friends home and Manimekalai allegedly yelled at them before going inside the house.

One of Udyakumar’s friends, Manikavel, is said to have entered the house when Manimekalai was changing dress. Manimekalai, who was distraught over the incident reportedly lodged a complaint at the Thoraipakkam police claiming that friends of her husband are ruining his life and making him an alcoholic.

Udayakumar, who heard about Manimekalai’s police complaint went to his house and stabbed Manimekalai several times using a kitchen knife. Hearing her cries, neighbours rushed to her rescue and Udayakumar fled the spot.

She was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, but she succumbed to injuries within hours. On information, the Thoraipakkam police have registered a case and launched a hunt for Udayakumar and his friends.
