EESL launches energy-efficient inverter ACs
After the success of the disruption in the LED bulb market in India, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a joint venture of four public sector enterprises, on Tuesday launched the first of its kind super-efficient air-conditioners in Chennai at Rs 41,300.

The firm claims the 1.5-tonne inverter split ACs on offer have an energy efficiency ratio of 5.4 that makes it 20 per cent more efficient than existing BEE 5-star rated ACs and 50 per cent more efficient than its 3-star counterparts. For example, the new AC is priced at Rs 41,300, while with the same specification would otherwise cost Rs 55,000 in the market.
EESL plans to procure around 50,000 ACs to address the festival season at a cost of around Rs180 crore, funded by borrowings and grants and by 2021 it plans to sell around 200,000 units. Manufactured by Voltas, the 50,000 units are exclusively sold through EESL’s e-commerce portal, www.EESLmart.in. The company is also looking to sell 20,000 Super-Efficient ACs in Chennai individually in next two years, targeting domestic consumers and institutions, including government premises.
SP Garnaik, Chief General Manager (Technical), EESL, said considering Chennai’s extremely hot and humid weather condition, the energy-efficient AC would help in reducing the peak power demand in the city. “The consumers here can expect considerable savings in their electricity bills, to the tune of Rs 4,000 annually, when compared to 3-star non-inverter AC available in the market,” he said.
T Ramesh, deputy general manager (Tech), EESL, said they were holding talks with the TANGEDCO to help promote the sale of the energy efficient ACs in Chennai.
