Light showers forecast for Chennai, Vellore gets 15 cm rain
The city and its suburbs that had been reeling under severe water scarcity until a few weeks ago, witnessed monsoon-like weather with an overcast sky, mild drizzle often leading to heavy downpour and plummeting temperatures over the weekend.

The heavy rain in the city on Saturday and Sunday led to a manifold increase in the average rainfall. The total seasonal rainfall in the city has reached 306 mm exceeding the expected 257.2 mm of rainfall from June 1 to August 18 this year, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre here. The northern parts of Tamil Nadu received very heavy rainfall with Vellore receiving a maximum of 15 cm of rainfall, while Chennai received a significant amount of rainfall during the early part of the day.
The weather stations at Nungambakam and Meenambakkam received 17.7 mm and 27.7 mm of rainfall respectively as the maximum temperatures remained 31.2 degree celsius and 30.1 degree celsius at the two weather stations. The minimum temperature recorded in Nungambakkam was 24.8 degree celsius and 24 degree celsius in Meenambakkam.Â
Various parts of the city, including Meenambakam, Nungambakkam, Guindy, Koyambedu, Kolathur, Virugambakkam, Velachery and Pallavaram received heavy rain that led to traffic congestions in many areas. Meanwhile, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Madurai, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, and Villupuram received at least 5 cm of rainfall each. The RMC issued a heavy rainfall warning stating that heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Vellore, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Thiruvarur. Meanwhile, Chennai is likely to be generally cloudy as light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to occur in the next 48 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31 degree celsius and 25 degree celsius respectively.
