Blocked storm water drains flood GST Road

The south suburbs of Chennai witnessed a spell of rainfall, following which the GST Road and its service road were flooded revealing the shoddy storm water drains that has been installed. The situation was worse in Guduvanchery, as the road was inundated and the motorists remained stranded.

Sources said that the storm water drains on both sides of the GST Road is linked to the Madambakkam lake. Now, owing to some block or shoddy construction of the drains, the rainwater was unable to drain into it, resulting in the roads getting flooded affecting free traffic movement.

Many complained that the government, which is repeatedly talking about harvesting rainwater, should ensure that their plan of leading the all the rainwater on GST Road to Madambakkam lake was done in a proper manner.

Instead of replenishing the lake, the rainwater ended up affecting traffic, leading to wastage of resource and time, an affected motorist said.

However, Guduvanchery Town panchayat executive officer Ravi said, “The repair work on the storm water drains are in progress. Because it is a National Highway, there is vehicle movement all through the day and night, resulting in the delay in the work undertaken.” “But the endeavour is to complete it as early as possible,” he added.
