Hunt on for housekeeper who forged cheque

The victim, S Syed Liakath Ali (27), is a businessman settled in United Arab Emirates (UAE) with his family. He often visits the city and stays at his house located at Lakshmipuram in Tiruvanmiyur, said police. The suspect was identified as Ravi from Odisha, who worked in Liakath’s house for the past five years. He was maintaining the house when the family was abroad.

Liakath reached the city a week ago along with his family members. All of them then went to Erode to attend a wedding on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he received a call from Canara Bank manager at St Thomas Mount branch that someone has come with a cheque to withdraw Rs 2.5 lakh from his account. But the signature on the cheque did not match with the specimen signature at the bank, which aroused suspicion.

Shocked, Liakath told the bank manager that he did not issue any cheque and requested him not to process it. He immediately called Ravi but his number was switched off.

Syed reached the city on Wednesday night and also found 46 sovereigns of jewels missing from his house. As Ravi also remained unreachable over the phone, the victim lodged a complaint at Tiruvanmiyur police station on Thursday, and police have launched a hunt for Ravi.
