Athi Varadhar immersion: HC directs TNPCB to check water quality
The Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to test the quality of the water before filling it in Ananthasaras, the temple tank in which Lord Athi Varadhar is going to be immersed for the next 40 years from August 17.

When the plea by K Asokan of West Mambalam seeking a direction to clean the temple tank ahead of the idol’s immersion came before Justice PD Audikesavalu, the TNPCB counsel submitted that testing of the water to be let into the tank was underway and sought time till August 19 to submit a report.
But, the judge pointed out that a report on August 19 would serve no purpose as the idol immersion was scheduled on August 17 and directed the board to submit the report by August 16. Meanwhile, a representative from Anna University submitted that water from Cauvery can be filled in the tank after cleansing it. During the hearing, the counsel appearing on behalf of Archeology department submitted that the though the tank was desilted, the debris was yet to be removed.
But the HR&CE counsel, who was putting forth suggestions of filling the tank using water from either borewell or from the Potramai Kulam, wondered as to what would happen if it rained. To this, Justice Audikesavalu remarked, “Is there anything purer than rainwater? If it rains, that will be the best and most suitable water to fill the tank.”
However, while adjourning he case to August 16, he directed that the water to be used for filling the tank should be subjected to tests by TNPCB.
Meanwhile, the judge dismissed a petition from International Sri Vaishnava Ramanuja Samrajaya Sabha, Kancheepuram, seeking to extend the public view of Lord Athi Varadhar to August 26.
Woman gives birth to ‘Athi Varadhar’ in temple
A 25-year-old woman gave birth to a boy after going into labour while walking out of Sri Devarajaswamy temple after worshipping Athi Varadhar on Wednesday.
The woman, Vimala (25), and her husband Ashok Kumar from Banavaram village in Arakkonam had reached Kancheepuram on Tuesday. The family allegedly tried to stop her from travelling as her delivery was due on August 27. But, Ashok decided to fulfil his wife’s wish. On Tuesday, the couple took rest at the shelter set up by the district administration and went to the temple around 2 am on Wednesday and waited in the queue. After noticing that Vimala was pregnant, other devotees allowed them to go forward quickly.
After worshipping the idol, the couple was heading to the exit when Vimala suddenly went into labour. Soon Dr Jansi Rani from the medical desk and nurses rushed to the spot. Attended to by the doctor and senior nurse Yogavalli, Vimala delivered a boy weighing 3 kg at around 9 am in the medical room. The parents have decided to name the baby as Athi Varadhar.
