Govt staff amasses Rs 86.33L, booked
Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has registered a case under Prevention of Corruption Act against a project director of District Rural Development Agency, Villupuram for allegedly amassing Rs 86.33 lakh worth assets, disproportionate to the known source of income, in four years.

DVAC has registered the case against V Mahendran and his father C Vellaisamy, a farmer. Mahendran was recruited as an assistant director in 2002 and elevated to the rank of project director in 2007. He was posted in Villupuram.
From January 2013 to December 2016, Mahendran held the post of project director, Cuddalore DRDA. He amassed maximum wealth during this period in his name and his father’s name.
At the beginning of the check period, the assets were Rs 4.5 lakh. But by the end of the four years, the pecuniary resources in the names of the accused zoomed to Rs 1.05 crore.
DVAC investigation found that the legal income earned by the two during the check period was only Rs 22.4 lakh, while they had an expenditure of Rs 7.39 lakh. Their likely saving should have been Rs 15 lakh, noted DVAC.
Disproportionate assets acquired by the official is thus pegged at Rs 86.33 lakh, which is 385 per cent more than his official income.
Mahendran's father abetted his son and persuaded in the commission of criminal misconduct by lending his name to acquire properties by Mahendran, which are disproportionate to his known sources of income, DVAC said in the FIR registered earlier this week.
