The accused, Jamal, has already been arrested several times on similar charges and was detained under Goondas Act in 2018. Jamal, who was released from the prison recently, targeted couples visiting the Marina and Ellliot’s beach and robbed them posing as a policeman.
“On Monday, he intercepted one Yuvaraj (23) of Perungudi on fourth avenue, Besant Nagar, and relieved him of Rs 500 claiming that he was a cop,” said police. Since Jamal sported a beard, Yuvaraj grew suspicious about his claim of being a policeman. He visited Shastri Nagar police station and informed about the incident. A team of police personnel rushed to the spot and secured Jamal who was standing in a nearby lane.
Investigations revealed that he is a history-sheeter, and police said they also recovered a stolen bike from him. Jamal was remanded in judicial custody on Monday.
In 2017, Jamal was arrested by Adyar police after he threatened a couple to book them under flesh trade charges and drove in their car to make them withdraw Rs 5,000 from an ATM.
