SRM students develop inkless printing technology
The Aura Labs team of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, bagged the first prize at the India Innovation Challenge Design Contest (IICDC) for developing a prototype of an inkless printing technology machine that is expected to be an invention in the printing industry and its related environmental pollution.

Dept of Mechanical Engineering, Prof Shilpa Thakur, M Tech, Robotics and Dept of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Prof Shylesh Srinivasan, B Tech were the brains behind the invention.
The team came up with a ‘Plasma Carburization Inkless Printing Technology’ that can print on paper without using any kind of toxic and expensive inks or toners. Of the ten teams that participated in the contest, the Aura Labs team emerged as toppers at the event held in Bengaluru.
The technology is perceived to be very effective in reducing the generation of plastic and e-waste contributed in a huge scale by discarded printer ink and toner cartridges that release toxic chemicals contained within them. “We used plasma energy to carbonize the paper surface instead of chemical inks and toners,” said Srinivasan.
Apart from receiving the first prize, Aura Labs was awarded the Chairman’s Award and MyGov India award for the Best Innovation and Technological Impact. The IICDC was conducted by Texas Instruments India in collaboration with DST India at IIM Bangalore and supported by MyGov India.
A total of 1,750 colleges participated and 10,000 projects were submitted of which 30 got shortlisted.
