    Met dept issues heavy rain warning in northern Tamilnadu

    The city has exceeded the average chief rainfall for the past two months with actual rainfall of about 247.5 mm. The normal average chief rainfall for the city is 155.7 mm.

    On Thursday night and Friday, Chennai receivedat least 50 mm rainfall, while other districts, including Sivagangai, The Nilgiris and Kancheepuram, received about 70 mm.


    Despite moderate to heavy rain in various districts for the past two months, the State has not yet receivedthe normal average chief rainfall. The actual chief amount of rainfall in Tamil Nadu this year is only 89 mm as against the normal chief rainfall of 117 mm. It is at least 24 per cent lower than normal rainfall in the State.


    The Regional Meteorological Department has issued a warning on Friday stating that heavy rainis likely to occur at isolated places over Kancheepuram, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and other parts ofNorthern Tamil Nadu.


    Though the maximum temperatures were about 37 degrees Celsius in the city at both weather stations earlier this month, the temperatures have dipped to 31 degrees Celsius. On Friday, the maximum temperatures at two weather stations were 31.5 degrees Celsiusand 31.0 degrees Celsius in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam respectively. Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures dipped to 24.3 degrees Celsius and 23.2 degrees Celsius respectively.


    RMC stated that the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy in the city for the next 48 hours, while light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 32 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius respectively.


    Weather blogger Pradeep John said that the rain is expected in northern parts of Tamil Nadu with Vellore, Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Kancheepuram receiving light to moderate rainfall.
