The rescued person, Kirubagaran Krishnapillai (45), came to the city for treatment in May. “He was found near a private hospital on June 1 by the local police and was sent to a shelter for mentally ill persons in Tondiarpet. He could not talk clearly and had a burn injury on his hand,” caretaker of the night shelter said.

The caretaker added that Kirubagaran had his return ticket and passport but could not board the flight due to his injury.

“After medications were provided at the shelter, his mental condition improved and he could share his details. Meanwhile, we informed the Canadian embassy, who in turn found his address in Canada,” the caretaker added.

Chennai Corporation officials and shelter caretakers arranged for his return journey on July 17. “He reached Canada safely and sent a photograph with his friend. Kirubagaran is of Tamil origin from Sri Lanka and migrated to Canada during the civil war.

Recently, the Chennai Corporation had also rescued a girl from Mumbai and sent her home with family.
