Corpn lists firms to provide waste processing services

As per the list, 18 firms have been shortlisted to provide onsite home composting and biodegradable waste processing services. As many as 12 firms have been selected for non-biodegradable solid waste management.

“The selected agencies will provide recycling and composting services to bulk waste generators -- more than 100 kilograms of waste per day -- and gated communities. The selected firms will provide the service for a period of one year,” a Chennai Corporation official said.

However, the waste generators would have to bear the cost of services rendered and the civic body has not fixed any price. “The waste generators are advised to enquire the full details and take an appropriate decision regarding this.”

If any waste generators face a problem with the listed service providers, they could contact the civic body to raise complaints. “We had invited expression of interest from the service providers and received responses from 30 firms. Applications of all the firms were scrutinised before they were authorised,” the official added. The civic body collects around 5,200 tonnes of garbage every day, of which 50 per cent is biodegradable. “The move would help Chennai Corporation to reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills. This would also help bulk waste generators to get proper assistance while setting up composting facilities,” the official said.
