Locals claimed that the main source of water in Mudichur was from the Mudichur Big lake and Chikanam lake in the locality. The residents in Mudichur village alleged that both the lakes had not been desilted or cleaned in a long time and should be cleaned before the monsoon so that they can store rainwater.

The locals claimed that the bund to the big lake was broken three years ago but still it was not restored. As both the lakes have gone dry now, the locals claimed that it was the right time to repair the lake and clean it. The residents also added that in many places the water was not supplied properly since many were drawing water illegally with the help of motors.

When asked about the issue, Mudichur Welfare Association Joint Convenor P Damodaran said, officials promised that the broken bund of the lake would be repaired four months ago but it was not done yet. “As these two lakes are the main water source for us, it should be clean very soon so that the water can be stored from now on,” he added.

The panchayat union Block Development Officer M Baskaran said, “We are planning to clean the lake but there are many encroachments. So, we have asked the revenue officials to look into the issue. After those encroachments are removed, we will start our work,” said the BDO.
