    Gold worth Rs 63.7 lakh seized at airport, 2 nabbed

    The Customs officers seized gold worth Rs 63.7 lakh from three passengers and arrested two of them at the city airport on Tuesday.

    When the Customs officers were checking the passengers who arrived from Colombo, they intercepted Toulath Ali (30) of Ramanathapuram and Nazeer Ahamed (44) of Madurai on suspicion that they were carrying gold. During a personal search, a total of nine bundles of gold inside rubbery spread were found concealed in their rectum. Two ingots of gold, weighing about 779 grams and worth Rs 28 lakh, were recovered. One of them were arrested on basis of his earlier offense, said sources.


    In another incident, the officers were checking the passengers who arrived from Kuala Lumpur. The Air Intelligence Unit officers intercepted Tajudeen Bin Farook (50) from Kuala Lumpur. When his check-in baggage was checked, six gold ingots, weighing about 796 grams, and 9 gold rods, weighing about 204 grams, were concealed in a table fan, motor of a ceiling gang and portable boombox. The gold totally weighing about one kg is worth Rs 35.74 lakh. The gold was seized and Tajudeen Bin Farook was arrested.
