“We have constituted a committee comprising of park and revenue departments of Chennai Corporation apart from reputed sabhas. The committee will devise and oversee various music-related initiatives,” a Corporation official said.

Although free of cost, the musicians who would like to perform at the city parks should approach the committee to avail permission, the official added.

It is learnt that the civic body is planning to start the initiative before August. “The concerts will be allowed on evening hours on weekend days. Slots will be allocated to the musicians based on the availability. During the first phase, major parks only would be allowed to host concerts,” the official added.

All forms of music would be allowed in the parks – the city Corporation is presently maintaining more than 600 parks. Meanwhile, the civic body has also charted plans to boost infrastructure to support various forms of music under Smart City Mission. Chennai Corporation-sponsored music events would also be organised at schools.

Recently, Corporation Joint Commissioner (Revenue and Finance) R Lalitha had participated in the UNESCO Creative Cities annual conference held in Italy, where cooperation between other UNESCO music cities was discussed.

“We will ensure the participation of musicians from foreign cities part from helping our musicians to perform abroad,” sources said. UNESCO had included Chennai in its Creative Cities project under music category in 2017 as a part of efforts to encourage culture and art.
