JK Tripathy to assume charge as State police chief today
JK Tripathy, the 1985-batch IPS officer who has been appointed as the new State police chief, will formally assume charge on Sunday.

A press release from the department said Tripathy would take charge as the new DGP at the at the State police headquarters around 2 pm, as the extended two-year tenure of incumbent T K Rajendran ends on Sunday.
The announcement about his appointment has put an end to a lot of speculations as to who would head the State police for the next two years. Tripathy’s name was selected from a list of three officials cleared by the UPSC recently. He is also the senior most IPS officer who has more than six months of service left.
An official with a proven track record, Tripathy and his team cracked two sensational bank robbery cases when he was the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner. Five members of a north Indian gang involved in the robberies were killed in an encounter in Velachery in 2012.
While the incumbent DGP T K Rajendran was due to retire in 2017, the State government extended his tenure as chief of police for two more years. The department has planned a formal send-off to Rajendran and has organised an event at Rajarathinam Stadium at 3.30 pm on Sunday.Â
Much-feted officer who took police to the masses
Known for his community policing initiatives such as Beat Officers’ System, Slum Adoption System and Complaint Box System when he was the Commissioner of Police in Tiruchy, the State’s new DGP Jalad Kumar Tripathy is the recipient of Police Medal for Meritorious Service, conferred by the President of India for the year 2002 and Dr Malcolm S Adiseshiah Special Award, conferred by the Government of India, for the year 2001.
He is also the first Indian police officer to receive two prestigious International awards from the United States.
He has also received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration and also the Police Medal for Distinguished Service by the President of India.
A native of Odisha, Tripathy is an MPhil graduate from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He cracked the Civil Services Exams in 1985 while pursuing his PhD and was appointed as an IPS officer in Tamil Nadu.
He served as Superintendent of Police in nine districts in the State before being promoted as Deputy Inspector General. After serving as the Commissioner of Police in Tiruchy, he was transferred to Chennai and placed as Joint Commissioner of Police, South Zone.
As an Additional Director General of Police, he was in-charge of prisons department and served twice as Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai. Also, before being appointed as the Law and Order DGP of the State, he was the Chairman of Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, Tamil Nadu.
