Two AIADMK functionaries from Kancheepuram district were booked after they damaged a median on the East Coast Road near Nemmeli village to make a quick way for VIPs visiting the third desalination plant for which foundation stone was laid by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, and also for erecting hoardings. On Thursday, as part of a ceremony held to lay the foundation stone for Chennai’s third desalination plant at Nemmeli, the AIADMK cadre cut through the median and created an opening close to the desalination plant so that the guests who came there could avoid travelling 500 metres more to make a U-turn to return to the city. The VIPs, sources said, did not use the newly created opening.

They had also erected the banners and hoardings carrying pictures of the Chief Minister and deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.

The Revenue officials sought the AIADMK workers to repair it. When there was no response, Mamallapuram tahsildar Rajendran and other Revenue officials examined the spot. Based on their instructions, the Nemmeli village administrative officer (VAO) Prakash filed a complaint with the Tiruporur police on Friday.

The complaint stated that AIADMK workers did not obtain permission to erect banners and hoardings, and damaged the median. The hoardings abutting the busy road posed a threat to the road users, Prakash said in his complaint. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against the AIADMK Kancheepuram district secretary Arumugam and party union secretary Kumaravel.
