Do not drink water sold at the Marina: Chennai Drinking Water Board

Chennai Drinking Water Board has requested people not to drink water sold at the Marina beach.
As the groundwater has receded, livelihood of Chennai people is terribly affected, and people are seen flocking to empty ponds for water. The Chennai Drinking Water Board is taking various steps to tackle the water problem. Drinking water is being supplied in trucks and water is pumped into the street pipes.
It has been found that digging in the sand along the Marina beach will yield some salt-free water. Therefore, 6 bore wells have been installed on the beach sand dunes on behalf of the Chennai Drinking Water Board. The public along the coast, including Nochikkuppam and Thousand Lights, carry water from here through pumps. One of the women of the area said, “Here, water is very clear and completely salt-free. We filter it and use it for drinking.”
The Chennai Drinking Water Board has now requested the people not to use water taken from the bore well pumps along the Marina beach for drinking purposes.
Managing Director of Chennai Drinking Water Board, Hariharan said, “Water taken from bore wells along the Marina coast was examined in the laboratory of the Drinking Water Board. It was found that the water was not suitable for drinking. It contained less solids needed for drinking water. But one can use that water for bathing and washing clothes.”
