Auto driver targeting elderly women nabbed
An auto driver who lured elderly women on the promise of paying Rs 1,000 for blessing north Indian families at functions and robbed their jewels was arrested by the Semmanchery police.
Chennai
The police seized nine sovereigns from the accused, A Sundar (30) of Perumbakkam. Following several complaints about elderly women being robbed by autorickshaw drivers at Semmachery, Neelankarai, Tiruvanmiyur and Thoraipakkam, a special team was formed to nab the suspects and CCTV footage from respective areas were retrieved.
As the footage showed that the same man was behind all the incidents, a hunt was launched for him and the team secured Sundar.
Explaining his modus operandi, the police said, “Sundar would look for lone elderly women wearing jewels and approach them. He would tell them there is a housewarming ceremony of a north Indian family in the area and that they are looking for senior citizens to bless them. He woos them by saying that they would be paid Rs 1,000 in return.
Believing him, the women go with him. He takes them to a secluded place and robs them before escaping from the spot. The women would be abandoned there,” the police said. E Anjalachi (64) of Sozhinganallur is one of the victims who lost 2.5 sovereigns to the autorickshaw driver in April.
Sundar was remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday.
