Chennai
They were identified as M Bharathi (45) Tirupathur and S Alamelu (39) of Jolarpet and 12 sovereigns were seized from them. The police said that they have similar cases pending against them in Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts.
The incident happened on Wednesday (June 19) at the shop on Washermenpet-Tiruvottiyur High Road, said the police. The two women reached around 2 pm when the owner Tharun Kumar’s father Misri Lal was present at the shop.
They asked him to show different jewels, but left the shop without buying anything. When Misri Lal was placing the jewels back in the rack, he realised that a box containing 150 grams of jewels was missing. He alerted Tharun Kumar who rushed to the shop and combed the CCTV footage. He found that the camera has recorded the women stealing the jewels.
The police registered a case based on Tharun Kumar’s complaint. After a CCTV footage showed them boarding a train from Chennai Central, the police sent their photos to all the police stations. They were arrested on Tuesday and remanded injudicial custody.
