Demolition at Velachery to go on for a week more

According to Southern Railway sources, there are 176 multi-storeyed buildings constructed on the Railway land near Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) station in Velachery. Out of them, 111 were used for commercial purposes.
It would take another week to finish demolition, said officials. The debris of some of the demolished buildings stands higher than two floors, which would take at least a week to clear.
It was after a long drawn legal battle that Southern Railway reclaimed their 1.5 acres of land in Indira Nagar in Velachery, which is worth several crores.
According to sources, the land was allotted to them in 2003 through a Government Order (GO) by cancelling the pattas issued by Revenue Department officials. But even after the GO was issued, the encroachments, some of which dates back to 1992, continued to remain till the court order.
