Vocational training gives young adults with autism a second shot

People with autism are given extensive training in such fields to combat their fear. Thanks are due to Swabhimaan, a school which deals with holistic solutions for autism, for holding regular workshops and training for these young adults with autism. They are being trained in baking, cooking, weaving, and handicrafts to make them lead a normal life.

Dr PK Partheeban, part of Swabhimaan trust, said, “Students with autism are divided into academically active and academically inactive sections. While the former group can go to open universities to pursue education, the latter will be given vocational training to get themselves equipped.”

“Our aim is to bring them out of their comfort zone. Most of the parents bring their children here with no hopes. But these workshops have offered a sense of self-confidence among the parents as well as the children and it has worked out very well,” he added.

Following the training offered, Imran (21), an autistic child, works in a fancy shop for half-a-day. He does tasks like stacking boxes and arranging the goods appropriately. He is also attending the training offered at school.

“Initially, he was aggressive and didn’t like the people around him. In the course of training, he started enjoying the process and is gaining interest,” said Imran’s mother Salimunisa, who is proud of her son for breaking the shackles.

She also shared her happiness to see him work like other children and talk to them despite the speech problems he suffered with initially. “Now, he is keen to work and says he is bored when he is idle. He loves doing his work and has garnered a special interest towards it,” she said.

“Some children are even interested to do farming and are big animal lovers. So we are planning to create a farming environment soon,” Partheeban noted.
