“We conducted one such training session on Wednesday, in which students from a private school also participated. We have built the park for this purpose and we have appointed a private automobile manufacturing company to train children,” a Chennai Corporation official said.

The official added that the students of the Corporation schools would be taken to the traffic park periodically. We already have school buses. The civic body has plans to invite private school students to the traffic park.

There are 281 schools run by the Corporation, including 32 higher secondary schools, and have more than 80,000 students.

The park was built up under the smart city mission at a cost of Rs 1.30 crore and the park has traffic signals, roads, bus stops and signages to give a feel of the real road.

A trainer in the park said apart from training students, persons above 18 years of age could also train at the park. “Private schools should inform the park management so that we can book the slot for the students,” he added.

Explaining the rationale behind the move, a higher official said that Tamil Nadu reports a higher number of accident deaths in the country and training the children would bring down the accidents.
