The State and Central narcotics agencies – Narcotics Control Bureau and Narcotics Intelligence Bureau – seized more than 8,260 kg of narcotics, mainly ganja, in the last one year, said senior officers here.

State police’s NIB has booked 1,493 cases and arrested 1,528 persons, beside seizing 6,480 kg of ganja worth Rs 7.31 crore. Nineteen accused were detained under Goonda’s Act during the last one year, according to ADGP Md. Shakeel Akhter.
NCB, the Central agency, has seized 1,780 kg of ganja, worth over Rs. 1.86 crore in the one year ended May 31, noted NCB zonal director A Bruno. During the same period a year ago, the agency had seized 1,398 kg of ganja.
“The use of ganja seems to have gone up multi-fold in Tamil Nadu. The large scale seizure indicates that,” noted Bruno. While the quantity of seizure of most of the other narcotics items by NCB has come down, the quantity of Hashish oil that has been seized has gone up – 2.4 kg this year up from 323 gm last year.
NCB has arrested 37 people, including 3 foreigners, for various narcotics cases registered in Tamil Nadu in the period between June 2018 and May 2019. During the same period last year, 40 people were arrested by the NCB.
The seizure of cocaine has come down to 2.81 kg from 14.59 kg last year. NCB sleuths had seized 32 blots of LSD last year while the figure stood at 20 blots this year. This year, the agency has seized 3 kg of hashish and 63 kg of pseudo ephedrine. Like last year, there was no seizure of heroin by the NCB this year too, indicating that the heroin is losing its charm.
