Police said that V Ganesh (13), a Class 8 student from Saravatherthakulam Thenkarai and P Parvinraj (18), a first-year college student, were playing near the temple pond when they saw the idol on the dry area in the tank. “The idol, weighing around five kg, is believed to be at least six centuries old,” police said.
“It looks like the idol was stolen from some temple and thrown into the pond. We don’t know from where it was stolen or who threw the antique idol there,” the police said, adding that they were trying to find the origin of the idol.
