The driver of the vehicle reportedly lost control which resulted in the fatal mishap, said the police.

The vehicle belonging to a private water supply agency was plying from Koyambedu towards Maduravoyal when it ran amok and rammed two bikes before hitting the victims. According to the police, the woman was caught in the front tyre of the vehicle, dragged for about 80 metres and killed on the spot. The tanker then came to a halt after ramming a water pandal.

The deceased was identified as Kaliammal (59), a resident of Perumal Kovil Street in Nerkundram. The injured were identified as Vijaykumar, husband of Kaliammal, Tamil Selvan (31) and Bakiyaraj (33).

The police said that the incident took place around 4.30 am and there were only a few people waiting at the bus stop, preventing a major accident. Immediately after the accident, the lorry driver managed to escape from the spot.

Later, the Koyambedu traffic investigation police registered a case and tracked the lorry driver, Vijaya Balan, a native of Mayiladuthurai and arrested him.
