Officials of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) seized nearly two tonnes of banned plastic items from a shop in Koyambedu wholesale market, on Friday.

According to an official, a surprise raid was conducted at a shop located inside food grains market in the premises. “We have received information regarding the storage of plastic items in the shop, based on which the raid was conducted,” the official added.
Around two tonnes of banned plastic items such as plastic carry bags, plastic cups and others were found in the shop. CMDA officials handed over the seized items to Greater Chennai Corporation officials.
The official added that several vegetable shops in the market were procuring banned items from the raided shop.
“We have identified two more such shops selling plastic items and we will take action against them, too,” the official said.
The seizure was done at a time when the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to impose a penalty against shops using banned plastic items in the city. From January 1 to June 9, the Chennai Corporation seized more than 242 tonnes of banned plastic items from several shops.
