    AMMK men, 6 others held for kidnapping trader

    The Velachery police have arrested an eight-member gang, including two Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam functionaries, which held a trader hostage demanding a share in his business profit.

    The main accused, K Elumalai (49) and M Baskar (43) of Velachery, hold key positions in AMMK, while other accused were identified as D Karthick (29), D Sridhar (28), K Patchurajan (24), K Velur (45), M Prabakaran (40) and S Prakash (45). The police said that the victim, Sheik John of Mannadi, who runs a textile business is known to the main accused and had borrowed Rs 1.2 lakh from them. While he returned the money, the duo allegedly demanded a share in his business profit. While Sheik John allegedly gave another Rs 2 lakh to them, the two men demanded more money and held him hostage in their house in Velachery, apart from hurting him.


    After Sheik John’s mother alerted the police, he was rescued. The eight accused were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
