The residents claimed that the garbage has spread all over the streets and often they even could not walk without covering their nose due to the stink.

Though the ward number 187 and 188, comes under the Chennai Corporation, the residents claim that since last month, the staff were not collecting the garbage and even the public bins were not cleared. “Also, after the election results were announced all the public bins which were placed on street corners have been overturned and we are unable to use them,” said a resident of ward 187.

In addition, the residents complain that the staff who were coming only once in 10 days to collect the garbage were asking them to segregate the wastes as bio-degradable and non-bio-degradable. “It will be good if the garbage is collected on an everyday basis, but the sanitary staff come only once in 10 days with the garbage collecting vehicle. However, we cannot segregate and keep the waste for 10 days but they are still not accepting and are asking us to separate it every day,” said RS Geetha, a social activist from the locality who said that despite collecting house tax from public, authorities were not diverting funds for garbage collection.

Another resident also said that while they were willing to do the garbage segregation, it would be possible only if the local body is regularly collecting garbage every day. “If they don’t come for 10 days in a row, where do we store the trash, especially the organic wastes,” said anotherresident.

When contacted, Chennai city Corporation engineer in-charge of wards 187 and 188, Raghuram said that they were looking into streamlining the process and the garbage would be collected regularly. He added that they also need public support to make the city clean. “Residents could help us by not throwing the garbage on the roads,”Raghuram said.
