Book helmetless cops, traffic wing told

Even as it is cracking down on those riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets after coming facing the heat from the Madras High Court over the allegedly lackadaisical implementation of helmet rule, the top brass of the city police has directed the traffic police personnel not to spare their colleagues in khaki if they are found violating the rule.

The oral order by senior officers to the personnel on the road, asking them to take strict action against cops who are found riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets, was issued in the backdrop of allegations that police personnel themselves were not following the mandatory helmet rules for the two-wheeler riders.

Senior police officers have also asked the field officers to submit report on a daily basis on the number of cases booked against police personnel who had violated the helmet rule. Not stopping with that, they have also been given a daily target: each traffic inspector and sub inspector have to book at least one police official driving without helmet every day.  All the traffic cops were asked to follow it strictly and supervisory officers were warned that they would be held responsible if the field staff failed to meet the target, added the order issued by the senior officer.

In addition to the legal implications, the police personnel in the city were also warned that they may have to face departmental action, too, if they were booked for traffic offenses like drunken driving or helmet less traveling, sources said.

After coming under fire from the High Court, the city police have started cracking down on not only those riding without helmet but also pillion riders. In an incident that played out on city streets on Saturday, two men picked up a quarrel with traffic cops, while the latter pointed out that insisting that the pillion rider, too, wore helmet was only for their safety.
