The victim, M Sarathkumar, is an MBA graduate. His father Mohan is a SB-CID head constable attached to DGP office, said police. The family lives in Mylapore police quarters. When he recently went to Madras University to collect his certificates, Sarathkumar met a man who identified himself as Suganthakumar.
The latter claimed to be working in Anna University and said he would get him a job there if Sarathkumar paid Rs 3 lakh. Believing him, Sarathkumar gave him Rs 1 lakh as advance but Suganthakumar stopped responding to his calls since then.
As his phone was switched off for the last few days, Sarathkumar visited Anna University and enquired about Suganthakumar.
That is when he realised that he had been cheated. He has lodged a complaint at Kotturpuram police station and a search has been launched for the suspect.
