DVAC traps Tangedco assistant EE receiving 30k bribe
Sleuths from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption nabbed an assistant executive engineer of Tangedco red-handed while he was receiving Rs 30,000 bribe from a man at his office in Anna Nagar on Friday evening.
Chennai
Karuppiah (51) of Anna Nagar had recently approached the assistant engineer, Manimaran, with a petition to remove an electric post from his 300 sq ft plot in the locality. However, Manimaran allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 as bribe from him.
With no other option left, Karuppiah agreed to pay the money and gave him Rs 20,000 as the initial sum. But as no efforts were done undertake the work, Manimaran met the assistant engineer again. He was told that the post would be removed only on payment of remaining Rs 30,000.
Dejected over this, Karuppiah approached the DVAC and lodged a complaint after which a trap was laid to nab Manimaran. They asked Karuppiah to pay Rs 30,000 to Manimaran at his office on Friday evening and when the latter received the money, a 10-member team led by DSP Lavakumar surrounded Manimaran and arrested him.
As there were other staff in the office when the arrest took place, tension prevailed in the area. Manimaran was later taken for further investigation.
