A 23-year-old girl, studying engineering at a private university, committed suicide by jumping from the eighth floor of a building on the campus on Sunday. The deceased, M Anupriya, pursuing biomedical engineering at SRM University in Kattankulathur, was in her final year. A resident of Ponneri in Tiruvallur district, Anupriya stayed at a hostel on the campus. After attending her last examination on Saturday, she didn’t vacate her room to leave to her hometown.
At 9.10 am on Sunday, when her mother Selvi and brother Raju Sundaram, who is studying at IIT-Madras, were on their way to take her home, she suddenly jumped from the terrace of her room on the eighth floor. Hearing the noise, security personnel at the university went to the spot and found her lying in a pool of blood. They rushed her to the SRM Hospital on the campus, but doctors declared her dead on arrival. On information, the Maraimalai Nagar police registered a case and sent her body to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for autopsy.
The two-page suicide note was addressed to her brother Raju Sundaram and she had asked him lead a life of his own without giving in to the pressure of their parents. She had also mentioned that she did not want to lead a fake life at home and added that no one was responsible for her death. Further investigation is on.
