KMC multi-speciality building to be functional by year end
The construction of a new block at Kilpauk Medical College in association with Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), a Japanese aid agency, to boost the infrastructure and facilities at the hospital is to take off by August.

JICA had sanctioned funds of about Rs 279.49 crore for this project in 2016 to build multispecialty blocks in the hospital. The new building will have modular hybrid theatre, nephrology unit, gynaecology unit, general medicine unit and emergency care unit at the hospital.
“There will be two modular hybrid operating theatre, a surgical theatre that will include advanced medical screening devices such as CT scanner and MRI scanners. The building will also house the emergency units including casualty, radiology, blood bank, IMCU, ICCU and others. The parts of the hospital that include extremely old buildings can be demolished later after the multi-specialty building becomes functional by year end,” said Dr P Vasanthamani, the dean of Kilpauk Medical College.
The equipment and furniture for the new building would be set up with Rs 4.89 crore. The allotment for buying the equipment for the specialised units at the hospital has been sanctioned already and the equipment will be commissioned by the director of medical services soon.
The building will be constructed adhering to the norms specified by the Medical Council of India for the construction of medical colleges and hospitals.
The burns ward is also getting an upgrade at the cost of Rs. 13.12 lakh. The Public Works Department is undertaking the civil works at the hospital related to construction of the new building.
