The police said that the main accused, S Amarnath (25) of Nandambakkam, is a mini truck driver. He bought the suspected narcotics from a man in Ramanathapuram for Rs 10,000 when he recently went there with a consignment.

The other accused have been identified as C Sasidharan (29) of Alapakkam, K Saravanan (26) of Karanodai, G Murugesan (33) of Villivakkam, R Tamizhvanan (47) of Tirumazhisai. All of them are labourers, the police said.

Amarnath decided to try it with his friends on Thursday as he thought the police would be busy on the counting day. However, passers-by who found them indulging in suspicious activities in an open ground in the locality alerted the Valasaravakkam police. A team of police personnel rushed to the spot and secured them. Ten kg of the contraband was seized from them.

“The person who gave it to Amarnath allegedly told him that the powder would be much sought after among college students as there would be no abnormal odour from it and he can earn a lot of money by selling it,” the police said.

Though the police have not identified the drug yet, they suspect it could be a party drug. They have sent it to the forensic lab for examination. All five of the accused were remanded in judicial custody on Friday.
