An appeal from the MTC managing director at Anna Nagar depot said that the fatalities involving two-wheelers happen because of buses proceeding at high speed without considering the road condition and not leaving adequate space on either side for overtaking vehicles.

Besides, the accidents happen due to the buses trailing the two-wheelers without leaving much space, the appeal said, adding these aspects come to light while analysing the fatalities involving two-wheelers.

According to the statistics put up by the MTC, the number of fatal accidents involving the corporation buses was 80 in 2018. Of these, 44 persons were riding or travelling pillion on two-wheelers and accounted for 55 percent of the total fatalities. In 2017, MTC buses were involved in 102 fatalities.

In order to avoid such accidents, the managing director has asked the bus  drivers to leave adequate space for vehicles to overtake the bus. “Moreover, the bus drivers should slow down while overtaking the two-wheelers and should drive safely,” the appeal said.

A senior official of MTC said that the safety and training wing of the corporation organises special training programmes for drivers and conductors involved in an accident, particularly if it is involved a fatality.
