The deceased, V Aswathy, a Class 5 girl hailing from Krishnagiri district, had come to her uncle Vinothkumar’s house in ICF for summer vacation with her grandmother Rama.

Vinothkumar, who works as a ticket examiner in Railways, left for work on Friday afternoon, leaving Aswathy alone at home. Since Vinothkumar’s child Yashwanth had been admitted at the railway hospital in Perambur for severe fever, his wife Janaki and Rama were at the hospital.

Aswathy who was alone at the house is said to have been playing in the cloth cradle meant for Yashwanth. “As her head got entangled in the cloth, she has tried to relieve herself, but in the process her neck got squeezed further and she died,” said the investigation officer.

Aswathy’s another uncle Easwaran, who also stays in the house and works as an AC mechanic, reached home in the evening and found it locked from within. He peeked through the window only to find Aswathy lying unconscious from the cradle. He broke open the door with the help of neighbours, relieved Aswathy of entanglement and rushed her to the railway hospital. But doctors declared her brought dead.

On information, ICF police retrieved her body and sent it to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Since doctors said that there was nothing suspicious about Aswathy’s death, police have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC and handed over the body to her kin.
