But have you ever thought of creating beautiful drawings on the floor with coloured powders? Apparently, there is a unique form of floor art called kalamezhuthu that is predominately found in South Kerala.

In order to propagate this traditional art form, Bonnie A Jose and Madhuri K of The Soul Window, along with Sarang Cultural Ventures, is organising a one-day workshop in the city.

“Kalamezhuthu is a ritualistic art form of Kerala practiced in temples and sacred groves, where the representation of deities like Kali and Lord Ayyappa are made on the floor using natural powders. Traditionally, kalamezhuthu is accompanied by pooja, kalapradakshinam (dance movements by the velichapad), kalampaattu (songs praising the Gods backed by traditional musical instruments) and other vibrant rituals. Keeping aside the religious aspects, what people aren’t realising is that kalamezhuthu has got a meditative capacity. While drawing the kalam (powder drawing) that’s more of intricate patterns and designs, the person feels mentally relaxed. It’s a very beneficial destressing activity. Creating art is a form of meditation — it emancipates and empowers you to reconnect with yourself. Moreover, it helps you understand what it means to be in the present,” says Bonnie.

Apart from the meditating effect, drawing kalams also help a person learn about their culture and traditional practices. The entire process can take up to two hours. “At the upcoming workshop on May 19 at Spaces, Besant Nagar, participants will get to practice designs using elements from the main kalam, understand the stories behind it, the traditional and cultural connections and preparation of the colours.”
