Plan your weekend: Chikmagalur: A haven for adventure-seekers, nature lovers

Situated at an altitude of 3,400 feet at the foothills of Mulliyangiri range, Chikmagalur is one of the best hill stations near Bengaluru. The city is famous for its serene environment, lush green forests and tall mountains.

It’s a wonderful destination to visit with many tourist spots, from pilgrimage sites to coffee plantation and wildlife tourism destinations to adventure sports destinations. Most of the resorts are situated among the backdrop of coffee plantations, so you wouldn’t have to travel for miles to smell fresh coffee beans. If you are an adventure lover, do not miss rafting in the outskirts of river Bhadra. Trained instructors and well-maintained equipment are available, so you won’t have to bother about safety. While travelling from Bengaluru to Chikmagalur, make sure you stop for a short break at the Hoysala temple circuit. This circuit includes a number of temples that were constructed between 11th and 13th century, especially the Belur, Halebidu, and Somanathapura.

The mountain circuit is the main attraction of Chikmagalur. It covers the three main mountain peaks — Sheethalagiri, Baba Budangiri, and Mullayanagiri. The trip will start from Sheethalagiri. There you will get to see an ancient temple whose history dates back to about 1,000 years. Make sure you carry some warm clothes, as wind there will be very chilly.

Despite the cold breeze and misty paths, you will have a great time here, away from noise and pollution. Another trekking spot is Kudremukh Trek — it is the second highest peak of Karnataka. This horse-faced mountain is a challenge for trekkers. It takes about 9-10 hours to complete the journey. Make sure you take a guide with you, so that you don’t miss the path.

Mangalore airport is the nearest airport which is at a distance of 158 km from Chikmagalur. The city is well connected with the state-owned bus services to other major cities in the state.
